NWS in Melbourne Releases More Information Regarding Damage from Tornado

IXORA PARK, Melbourne, Fla --

Officials from the National Weather Service in Melbourne released more information today, regarding yesterday's tornado that ransacked through 2 Melbourne neighborhoods on Thursday evening.

Meteorologists and scientists from the NWS surveyed more damage from the Ixora Park neighborhood, not far from the NWS Office itself.

The trail of damage surveyed, which was over a mile long, included uprooted large trees, fences, blown down and power infrastructure and structural damage.

It all started on the corner of Adams and Hoover Ave, and crossed Sarno Road, the survey crew of scientists says.

The tornado ripped through the corner of Cadillac Circle and Buick Ave, and through the back end of Dodge Circle, before continuing on and exiting the south side of the neighborhood.

Data collected from past Dopler radar images and wind velocity measurements, as well as scientists finding a trail of large tree limbs and partially uprooted trees in a small, wooded area between the NWS office and airport property, south of Ixora Drive West, proved the twister didn't stop at the Ixora Park Neighborhood.

The EF-0 rated tornado traveled south to the airport runway hangers, where it caused damage to a couple of airplane hangars before dissolving, the NSW says.

Survey Summary:

A National Weather Service survey team conducted an initial damage assessment Thursday evening in the Bowe Gardens neighborhood, near Sarno Road in Melbourne. Additional surveys from this morning were completed extending the path south to the northern portions of Melbourne airport.

The surveys determined that a brief EF-0 tornado occurred shortly before 6:00 PM EDT, which was on the ground for approximately 4 minutes. The preliminary width of the tornado was 75 yards with a total path length of 1.1 miles.

The tornado touched down near Adams Avenue and moved south- southeast toward Sarno Road. In this area, multiple homes experienced carport, roof, siding, and soffit damage. Several trees were uprooted or partially uprooted, large tree branches were scattered, and a few power poles were snapped.

As the tornado moved south of Sarno Road into the Ixora Park neighborhood, it continued to produce sporadic damage to trees, fences, and collapsed a pool enclosure at one home. The tornado went through a wooded area on the north side of Melbourne Airport affecting trees and a few hangars before dissipating.

There are presently no known direct injuries or fatalities as a result of the tornado damage. Thank you to Brevard County Emergency Management, local broadcast media, trained spotters, and local residents for providing information before and during the storm survey.

2 Neighborhoods Clean Up

The cleanup process has begun in the Ixora Park and Garfield Presidential Neighborhoods.  Neighbors were offering assistance to other neighbors -- offering to lend chain saws and other tools to remove tree limbs.  Power crews quickly restored power over night.

And then, there's the dreaded insurance claims process.  There is no word yet on how much damaged the twister caused.

For some, the twister was a reality.  We spoke to one homeowner in the Garfield neighborhood, as FPL crews were working on replacing power poles last night, who wished to remain anonymous, who said they weren't even home when it happened and came home to her tree laying in the front yard. "Luckily it landed in this direction instead of on top of the roof."

For other nearby, they got lucky.  "The tornado missed us here by a few yards", another neighbor said.

A tornado went through 2 Melbourne, Florida neighborhoods, knocking out power to dozens of homes. FP&L crews work overnight to replace snapped power poles, replace line, and restore the power.

Power was restored earlier Friday Morning as crew worked fast throughout the night to get victims electricity back online.
