SHARPES, Fla
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------A Palm Bay man is behind bars today after he allegedly crashed his car on U.S, Highway 1 and Lincoln Ave. in the city of Melbourne.
According to arrest affidavits, Traffic officer Goetsch responded to the scene and learned the suspect had fled the scene after crashing into another vehicle. The victim supplied the officer with information and upon investigation, authorities identified 39-year-old John Maxwell as the hit-and-run driver.
According to the arrest report, the car driven was owned by the suspect's mother owned the car but John was using it that day and was "going out" to the Downtown area, the investigation revealed.
Officers then went to the downtown area to be on the lookout for the suspect's vehicle. A short time later, they observed the suspect fighting and causing a disturbance outside a bar. The suspect was taking his shirt and yelling profanities. Officers ordered the suspect to sit down on the curb. As backup arrived, they placed John Maxwell, 39, under arrested for Failure to Report and Accident and Disturbing the Peace.
Upon arrest, Maxwell became belligerent and began kicking the patrol car's backseat door open. Officers transported Maxxwell to the hospital and restrained him into the WRAP device.
The WRAP device is used by police to further subdue rowdy and belligerent arrestees, by tying the legs together and "WRAP"ing the hostile suspect up like a burrito. Officials say this is safer and more effective than hog tying an uncompliant suspect.
Once cleared from the hospital due to the car accident, Maxx well was transported to the Brevard County Jail.
At the jail, Maxwell was discovered to be hiding a white powdery substance in his sock.
Jail documents say while in the strip search and changing room, 3 jail intake deputies witnessed a white powdery substance fall out of Maxwell's sock. A Seargeant then observed Maxwell pick up the white substance and put it into his mouth. Jail deputies ordered him to spit it out.
Deputies were able to retrieve the "rock like powdery substance" and identify it as Fentanyl. Maxwell claimed it was Xanax and that claimed he had a prescription for it but was unable to provide the details for it.
Maxwell was charged with Introducing Contraband into a Secure Facility, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Leaving a Crash Site, and Disorderly Conduct / Disturbing the Peace and posted a $5,750 bond.
