THE BREVARD COUNTY JAIL --
A Melbourne man is being held at the Brevard County jail on no bond awaiting trial after he allegedly beat a 6-month-old infant child.
In a news release and according to Melbourne police, officers responded to a home on Mount Carmel Lane on June 10 around 11 a.m. for reports of the child not breathing. After attempting CPR, paramedics took the baby to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
25-Year-old Edrick Lamar Davis initially told police that while the baby's mother was in the shower, he fed the child, who fell asleep, and then put the infant down and got into the shower with the child's mother. The parents found the infant unresponsive upon their return to the room 15 to 20 minutes later, they told police, and called 911, giving the child "rescue breaths" until paramedics arrived.
In an arrest affidavit, police said Davis later admitted that while the baby’s mother was in the shower, he kneed the baby in the back of the head at least twice because the baby was fussy and crying which made him “stressed out".
The Brevard County Medical Examiner’s Office later deemed the case a homicide after an autopsy revealed a severe brain injury that caused the child’s death. During an interview, Davis initially denied any knowledge of how the injury occurred but ultimately admitted to hitting the baby, according to investigators.
Investigators with the Criminal Investigations Division "were provided evidence of acute and extensive trauma to the child that resulted in his death."
The Medical Examiner's Office said the child suffered multiple acute internal injuries caused by blunt force trauma, including contusions to the back of his head; brain and ocular nerve hemorrhages; and fractures to the clavicle, tibia, ribs and jawbone.
Police arrested Davis Wednesday without incident. He was booked into the Brevard County jail without bond.
Friday, Judge Michelle Baker made sure of that by ordering Davis be kept in jail without bond.
“Alright, Mr. Davis, you understand the charges against you,” Judge Baker asked the defendant.
“Yes, your honor,” Davis answered.
He will return to court next month.
