PALM SHORES, Fla -- A large and fairly deep sink hole has shut down U.S. Highway 1 just north of the Pineda Causeway on ramp. The hole opened up this morning, on a newly paved patch of roadway on the outside southbound lane about a block from exiting the on ramp as you're merging onto U.S. Highway 1.
There has been heavy construction in the area the past few years, including improved drainage, a traffic control signal, and additional turn lane merging both onto the Pineda Causeway and U.S.1. Reports are saying this is a "rapidly developing" sink hole.
If you are traveling from Cocoa and Rockledge and heading south, traffic officials say to take Whickham Road or A1A as alternate routes.
Traffic southbound on U.S.1 is backed up all the way to Cocoa and Rockledge.
Authorities have deemed it's safe enough for traffic to get by on the emergency breakdown lane. Officials with the Department of Transportation are on scene assessing the hole and will determine how to fill it and repair the roadway.
