On Friday, July 12, 2024, the Orange County Sheriff's Office (OCSO) Gang Unit was conducting surveillance on a house with gang members suspected of multiple crimes, and an individual who had left the house holding a gun.
The gang unit radioed to uniformed patrol deputies to contact the teenaged gang member, identified as 19-year-old Tristan Mayberry, who walked into the 7-Eleven at 4011 W. Oak Ridge Rd.
Deputies made contact regarding the teenagers motorized scooter and Mayberry turned around, walked away suddenly and refused to stop for the deputies.
As the deputy ordered the teenager to stop, he noticed another deputy attempt to corner him from the other side.
The 19-year-old turned back around and attempted to reach under the front of his waistband area to retrieve what was a gun.
He was shot.
2 Shots rang out striking the suspected gang member.
As he fell to the ground, a struggle was underway for the weapon between him and the other deputy.
He was shot again.
Any time a subject carries a gun into a 7-Eleven and then doesn't follow the instructions of law enforcement, there's always a risk," Sheriff Mina told reporters after the incident occurred.
"I commend our deputies. They're out there doing their job, trying to combat violent crime, trying to get guns off the streets. It's unfortunate the person didn't listen to law enforcement." ~ John Mina, Orange County Sheriff.
"He's about 19 years old and it's unfortunate that our young people are involved in this type of activity and carrying guns and hanging out with known gang members," Sheriff Mina said. "This is just a problem we have nationwide with young people involved in guns and violence."
The gangster died at the scene.
Video obtained by The Police Activity Channel shows members of the Orange County Sheriff's Office Gang Unit approaching the teenager who was suspect of many crimes.
