Melbourne Police Arrest Suspect in Deadly Shooting During Youth Football Game

Police in Melbourne provide an update regarding 2 a shooting which occurred at a park during a youth football game. 

Andrew Guzman Arrested for Murder

Police authorities announced today the arrest and apprehension of 30-year-old Andrew A. Guzman for the premeditated murder of a victim during the end of a youth football game over the weekend.

Police say Guzman shot and killed 31 Devon Lakes of Palm Bay and fled the scene. Another victim is listed in critical condition at an area hospital. 

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, crime scene technicians were able to locate 8 spent shell chasings that were of 9 mm caliber in nature. Witnesses say a red colored Tesla was seen fleeing the area after the shooting.

Officers describe the victim as having 2 fatal gunshot wounds to the chest area. 

According to a news release, authorities say an arrest warrant was issued for Guzman on Sunday.  The Brevard County Sheriff's Office Game Over Taskforce apprehended Guzman without incident at a relative's house in Palm Bay. 

Guzman was transported to the Brevard County Jail on no bond where he awaits trial.

Records show that Guzman was charged with 1st degree premeditated murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and discharging a firearm in public.  More records show that the suspect has a long history with the law.

Authorities say an incident occurred at approximately 3:25 p.m. on Camphor Way, where Melbourne Police officers were dispatched following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, first responders say they found an adult male victim who had been shot. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. 

According to witnesses, an unknown male suspect exited a light-colored car and began shooting at the unidentified victim who was in the driveway of a home along with at least one other individual. Police say after the shooting, the suspect fled the scene in the vehicle. 

The Second Shooting; Children Playing Football

Later that evening, at approximately 7:25 p.m., a second shooting occurred - this time, at Eddie Lee Taylor Park, located at 3316 Monroe St., as a crowd had gathered to watch youth football games and mourn the death of Craig Dewberry, a victim of an earlier homicide not far away from this incident.

Gunshots rang out at the entrance/exit to the park, causing panic and prompting the crowd to flee in various directions.

Witnesses told investigators that at the time of the shooting children were just finishing playing football and cheerleading were running for their lives screaming. Some stopping to throw up while searching for their parents during the mayhem according to witnesses.

Police discovered two adult male victims at the scene. One was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, while the other, found in the parking lot, was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. 

The identities of the victims have not been released at this time.

The area is known for its illicit drug activities, violence and shootings.

On-Going Investigation

“Melbourne police detectives are investigating both incidents and attempting to determine if they are connected,” said a Melbourne police spokesperson.

Brevard County Sheriff's Office, Melbourne Crime Scene Vans and the Criminal Investigations Unit responded to the scene to investigate. Around a dozen evidence markers were placed around the crime scene.
