Shooting in Palm Bay, Law Enforcement Involved

The Palm Bay Police Department warned the public to avoid an area off of Malabar Road due to a large police presence on Friday following what was described as a “critical incident.” 

At 9:40am this morning, Police had descended on the area of Biarritz Street NW in Palm Bay.

About an hour later, the police department said the scene was secured, adding a news conference would occur at 12:30 p.m,

The Palm Bay Police Department issued an alert to residence to stay in place of their residence.  

Police said they were looking for an "extreme dangerous" person -- identified as 29-year-old Joseph Flemming -- described as a black male wearing no shirt and baggy sagging pants down.  Authorities say he was in a domestic violence incident and shot and killed the victim.

At the press conference, the Palm Bay Police Chief said officers were going through yard to yard and established a perimeter to contain the shooting suspect.  The Brevard County Sheriff's Office Aviation Unit also responded to the scene to locate the suspect from above.

Additional help from West Melbourne Police Department arrived to help the Palm Bay officers. 

The suspect was shot after shooting after officers. He sustained injuries and was life flighted to the hospital, according to the police chief.

Extensive Felony History

According to the police chief, Mr. Flemming has an extensive felony record to include armed home invasion, drug possession and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. 

"I pray for my officers everyday", the Police Chief told reporters.
