01:30pm 04/16/2025 -- West Melbourne Fire Department and Brevard County Fire Rescue respond to a wooded area along John Rodes near Interstate 95

A large fire broke out today in Melbourne. As of 5:06 p.m. Wednesday, it burned approximately 31.6 acres. It was 95% contained. 

John Rodes Blvd. was shut down in all directions from Eau Gallie Blvd. to Dow Road for several hours as fire crews worked. 

Fire crews and the Division of Forestry were able to plow a fire line and fully contain the fire east of John Rodes around 5pm. 

The fire jumped the road shortly thereafter and entered a senior living community. Parts of Lamplighter Village was evacuated as a precaution. 

"Nearly everyone was outside hosing down their property", one Lamplighter Village resident tells The Blake Moia Show.

"Smoke was everywhere. It was so unbearable", said another resident.

Firefighters were able to douse the area with water. Around 7pm John Rodes was opened back up.

Sources tell The Blake Moia Show that police are investigating the fire as a possible arson. 

"Several homeless camps are in those woods", an official told The Blake Moia Show.

As of 9pm, firefighters report that hot spots have sparked back up. Crews are monitoring the area. 

No injuries were reported as well as no damage to buildings or structures.

The Melbourne Fire Department continues to put out spot fires as of 2am Thursday.

A strong odor of smoke persists and vulnerable people with breathing problems should stay inside.
