THE BREVARD COUNTY JAIL, FL  --

The Melbourne community is a little safer tonight after authorities caught a wanted potentially dangerous sexual predator.

Several social media reports came in on Friday said police, the sheriff and a sheriff's helicopter were circling around and chasing a "wanted fugitive" around the area of Wal-Mart near Sarno and Wickham Road - not far from the Ixora Park neighborhood.

Authorities provided an update later on saying an absconded sexual offender who was required to report into the office failed to do so is now in custody.

We looked into further details of the incident:

Detectives were able to track 34-year-old Michael J. Carrion to a wooded homeless camp which is behind the Wal-Mart Shopping Center on Sarno Road and Wickham Rd.  Authorities say Carrion failed to show up to report to registration on several occasions, as required by law, between September 11, 2024 and November 2024.

Furthermore, police say the sexual offender is listed as homeless and unemployed and missed "transient check-in".

When police checked the wooded area, police say Carrion took off on foot and attempted to flee the area and avoid capture. Further assets were deployed such as a helicopter and a police K-9. Police were able to catch the suspect a short time later and bring him to jail.  He is at the Brevard County Jail under a no bond status.

Past records say Carrion was previously convicted of lewd and lascivious sexual battery of a child between 12 and 16 years old.

The Brevard County Sheriff's Office says 57-year-old Terry Harper was arrested for violation of sexual offender status after he was found to be at a public park.

During the early hours of Friday morning, January 10, 2025, Brevard County Deputies on routine patrol spotted a red truck parked at the Port Saint John Boat Ramp and Park during the closed after hours.

Deputies were able to identify Terry Harper as a registered sexual predator offender who had orders not to trespass on public parks.

Prosecutors say Harper was convicted in 1999 for sexual offenses of a child under the age of 16.

His next court appearance is Feb. 6 at 1:30pm in Viera.
